Mini Recitals
January 21, 2023 - January 22, 2023
At Orrett, we pride ourselves in providing extra performance opportunities for our students. Historically, this has meant 2 performances per year: Mini-Recitals and SOUNDFEST. Every year culminates in June at our annual SOUNDFEST concert at the Assembly Hall. This is a massive and exciting event (details to come early in 2023).
When Orrett was built, we included a performance space of our own. Before COVID, this space held annual Mini-Recitals in Jan/Feb and they are back!
WHAT ARE MINI-RECITALS?
Mini-Recitals are designed as a much shorter, less formal opportunity for students to perform in front of a smaller audience in a familiar space (right here at Orrett). Students are welcome to perform even half-finished songs. It is an experience-builder and one we can’t recommend enough. It helps set goals, build confidence, and create positive memories. (These aren’t old-school formal recitals – they are relaxed and friendly).
HOW IT WORKS
Orrett has nearly tripled in size over the last 3 years since before COVID. As a result, the logistics of putting on these concerts have become more complicated, but we will keep it as simple as possible for you. There is a lot of info to cover. Please read carefully. Here goes…
- There are 46 Mini-Recitals (most are 30 – 45 minutes in length).
- Unlike at SOUNDFEST, where each recital has a variety of teachers and instruments, Mini-Recitals are mostly one teacher (max 2) per show. We have assigned the number of recitals per teacher based on how many students they have.
- Group students are assigned a particular show.
- The schedule for the shows is attached to this email.
- You can only perform at a recital where your teacher is present. (If your teacher has more than one recital, you can choose your favourite, if space permits, and register for that one with your teacher.)
- If you take lessons with more than one teacher, and wish to perform for each teacher, you would need to register for and attend multiple Mini-Recitals.
- Teachers determine what you will perform (with input from students and parents of course)
- If you wish to perform, you MUST register in advance.
- To register, REGISTER WITH YOUR TEACHER! (They have access to a custom registration module designed for each of them.)
- Students perform for free.
- Guests pay at the door – cash only. $10 General Admission. $5 for ages 12 and under
- Strict limit of 4 guests per performer (1 performer + 4 guests = 5 people total) due to space restrictions in the room.
- If you wish to bring more than 4 people, please check with Kate first and she will let you know if the show doesn’t fill up and seats remain available.
- There are no tickets or programmes. Performance order is determined by the teacher within each show.
- Unfortunately, 3107 Bloor St W (our building) is not wheelchair accessible.
- Please note masks are recommended but not enforced at the event. Please attend only if comfortable.
- The atmosphere is positive, light, and fun.
- Once again, most shows are maximum 45 minutes – SEE ATTACHED SCHEDULE.
Due to the volume of questions and registrations, we once again kindly ask that you communicate directly with your teacher(s). We are running 46 recitals and can only do this with your cooperation and understanding.
SUMMARY
Remember, you MUST REGISTER WITH YOUR TEACHER. Don’t wait too long in case space runs out. There are no tickets; it is pay cash at the door. Limit 4 guests per performer. (ex: 2 performers in a family may bring up to 8 guests). This is an informal event to build confidence and is HIGHLY recommended!
Please see the attached schedule, SAVE THE DATE, and go talk to your teacher about details and registering ASAP!
On a personal note, I’m so happy that these mini-recitals are back. I LOVE seeing young students perform and I plan to attend most of the 46 concerts personally. Live music is a beautiful thing.
